Welcome to the beginner guitar lessons section of Guitar Tricks ®. Here is where you will find lessons for absolute beginners that are brand new to guitar, as well as some material for brushing up on the fundamentals, if you have some familiarity but are still at the beginner level. Ironically, a guitar player who truly masters one scale inside and out all over the guitar fingerboard will have far more to say musically (and will be much more creative doing it) than a guitar player who knows 30 different scales as pieces” (individual shapes) scattered around the guitar.

I’ve covered the most common techniques used in lead playing, and those are the ones you absolutely have to master when learning how to play electric guitar as a solo instrument, but there are other, more advanced techniques that you might like to look at as well.

Left-handed players sometimes choose an opposite-handed (mirror) instrument, although some play in a standard-handed manner, others play a standard-handed guitar reversed, and still others (for example Jimi Hendrix ) play a standard-handed guitar strung in reverse.

You can also use tracks that have been recorded specifically with jamming in mind – there are lots of free guitar jam tracks in many styles available online (although the quality does vary a lot), and there are also professionally recorded tracks available for sale at low prices.

When learning how to play electric guitar as a lead instrument many people leave sweep picking till late on, as it is very hard to master, but I would advise anyone who is serious about their playing to try and tackle it early on, for precisely the same reason.
